Singapore education pathways not via grades

On 25 January at Thomson Community Club, I had the privilege of sharing with parents and students about the educational pathways that extend beyond grades. The conversation centred on a crucial shift in how we view success by moving away from the notion that PSLE or O/A Level scores are the only gateway to a student's future.

It was an honour to have Ms Gan Siow Huang, Minister of State for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Ministry of Trade and Industry, grace my talk with her opening speech to parents, as part of our community outreach for education to the general public. Singapore's education landscape has changed over the years. Now, every student's journey is different, and success does not follow a single route.

Beyond Grades: A World of Possibilities

The traditional pathway via grades is no longer the only pathway. Options such as Direct School Admission (DSA) and Early Admissions Exercise (EAE) have transformed the landscape, allowing students to access various secondary schools, junior colleges and polytechnics based on their talents, passions and strengths not just their exam scores.

Whether your child excels in sports, STEM, arts, leadership or any other domain, there is a pathway to the school that can further develop his/her skills. A student passionate about robotics, entrepreneurship or even history (yes, history!) can build a compelling portfolio that speaks to admissions panels far more powerfully than any grade ever could.

The Real Game-Changer: Your Personal Brand

What schools truly seek is your story: a coherent narrative that reflects who you are beyond your test scores. It's about demonstrating initiative, building meaningful experiences, and articulating a clear vision for your future. Schools want driven students, not just high-scorers.

This shift levels the playing field. You don't need to be the most academically gifted to secure a place. You need to know yourself, pursue what genuinely excites you, and communicate that passion authentically.

Planning Early Pays Dividends

The families who thrive in this system start strategically early. Together with the parents, the student identifies strengths, aligns subject choices and build his/her portfolio with intention. Rather than chasing trends or stacking certificates, the goal is to curate a story that feels authentic and compelling.
