The Early Years: Laying the Foundation

As a teacher and mentor in Singapore, I have seen how starting early can truly shape a student’s journey, especially for those with their sights set on top universities globally. My very first student, Jay, is a story that still keeps me grounded in what I do.

Meeting Jay: Ambition Meets Guidance

I first met him when he was in Year 9 (Secondary 3) at ACSI. Thoughtful, capable, and curious, he was still finding his footing in Singapore’s pressure-cooker environment. When he came to me for IB Chemistry tuition, he was upfront: “Mr Thio, I want to try for Oxbridge or Ivy League-tier of universities.” Ambitious, yes, but I reminded him, “Jay, these days, universities want more than just straight As. You need to show your passion and build your story.”

Building a Portfolio: More Than Just Grades

Over four years, we worked closely. Not just on Chemistry, but on shaping his academic narrative. I encouraged Jay to take part in the Singapore Chemistry Olympiad. He joined a robotics competition to build technical depth and played in his school band, representing ACSI at the SYF. Bit by bit, his story came together not just as a list of achievements, but as a cohesive identity.

Growth Beyond Academics

As we refined his portfolio and prepared for his application to Cambridge (including interview tips), I watched Jay master not just in his IB academic subjects, but in confidence and presence. Post-IB, he scored 42/45 with a 7 in HL Chemistry and an offer to read Engineering at Cambridge. That was a proud milestone, but the real reward was seeing him become self-assured and ready for the world. As an aside, he chose NUS eventually.

Mentorship That Lasts

We still keep in touch, because mentorship doesn’t end after university admission. These days, more students come to me through word of mouth. Families who value depth, clarity, and trust. Currently, I am guiding a sec 4 student in preparing his portfolio for Oxford, helping him think not just about the course of study, but about crafting his personal, compelling story that will hopefully lead to an offer.

The New Reality: Start Early, Go Far

Parents, this is the reality now in Singapore and globally: non-academic achievements and a strong portfolio matter more than ever. Building this takes years, not months. Start early, let your child explore, and guide them to grow into their best selves. This journey isn’t just about grades. It’s about nurturing character and lifelong curiosity.
