Refining Foundations for an Unpredictable World

Parents often ask me if traditional education still holds value in an age of artificial intelligence. As governments warn of AI reshaping entry-level careers, that anxiety is understandable. But my answer remains unchanged: the core rules of learning have not shifted. In fact, they have become paramount.
From primary school to JC and polytechnic, mastering the fundamentals in linguistics, scientific laws, mathematical axioms and the humanities is essential. Without a deep, personal grasp of core concepts, how will a student know when an AI model is hallucinating or giving flawed logic? You cannot evaluate what you do not understand. Basic mastery, including key theories, isn't outdated; it is the prerequisite for higher-level discernment. To stand on the shoulders of giants, you must first build a firm place to stand.
Crucially, this core mastery is what unlocks human ingenuity and creativity. These are qualities that remain far beyond the reach of any algorithm. AI can reassemble existing patterns, but true innovation, original art and breakthrough problem-solving require a deeply human spark grounded in real understanding.
This dedication to foundational rigor is why Singapore punches so far above its weight. We make up 0.07% of the global population, yet represent way higher than that in the world’s top global universities. Excellence isn't accidental.
When a student struggles with core academics, targeted mentorship matters. Throwing a child into complex topics with only a self-study manual or an AI prompt creates unnecessary friction. Some survive, but most need a guide. That is where educators (be it school or private) fit into the ecosystem as dedicated mentors filling specific learning gaps.
Perspective is equally important. Singapore’s $1.8B tuition sector is a fraction of MOE’s $16B+ budget. Directing resources toward developing a child's intellect is simply a reflection of shared priorities.
Finally, true resilience in an AI-disrupted world requires depth outside the classroom. CCAs, leadership, empathy, financial literacy and student-led micro-ventures teach students how to adapt when traditional paths disappear.
At our core, true educators share the same intent: helping the next generation master the basics, think deeply and unleash their distinctively human creative potential.
