Navigating Shifts: What Chemical Engineering Taught Me About DSA Strategy

A parent enquired at Ryse Education last week, interested in exploring DSA options for his child. However, he was deeply worried about planning too far ahead on a specific domain, unsure if it would be scrapped by the time his child is ready for the DSA exercise three years later.
His anxiety is entirely valid and it brought me back to my past life as a chemical engineer. In process control, we learned that the most stable systems are not those that react quickly, but those that anticipate wisely. Feedback control responds after an error has occurred; feedforward control prepares before the disruption hits.
In engineering practice, a pure feedforward controller is rarely used alone because it cannot correct for unmeasured disturbances. The gold standard is a feedforward-feedback cascade, where feedforward handles the bulk of predictable load changes, feedback reacts to output changes and cascade layers loops for faster correction. .
Many families navigate admissions purely through a feedback loop, reacting frantically only when a requirement shifts. What we are seeing now is a system that no longer rewards this pure reactivity. Recent structural shifts: Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH) abruptly scrapped its STEM domains for this year’s DSA exercise and Temasek Junior College (TJC) is making similar removals for the 2027 exercise (for 2028 Sec 1 entry). These are not anomalies. They are signals.
Parents who focus shortsightedly on specific DSA categories risk overfitting to a moving target. When domains change or are scrapped overnight, narrowly engineered portfolios lose their anchor.
A successful DSA strategy requires that engineering cascade. We use feedforward to build underlying capability, be it intellectual range, critical thinking or interesting projects that showcase one’s problem-solving skills. These foundational skillsets are portable across any domain and compound over time. Then, we use feedback to agilely trim and tailor the application for target schools when final domain requirements are locked in.
