PSLE 15% challenging questions

Today's Straits Times highlighted MOE's confirmation last year: about 15% of marks in each PSLE subject are allocated to “challenging” questions. Still within the syllabus, age-appropriate and scaffolded. For the average student, though, these remain effectively unsolvable under exam pressure.

Quick math: that is a straight 15-mark penalty. At best, you're hitting 85/100. This is the AL2 borderline. Add careless slips or stress, and it drops to AL3 or AL4 per subject. Across four subjects? An overall AL12–16 for a solid, hardworking kid. Respectable, but short of popular IP schools' typical sub-AL9 cut-offs.

Even with MOE's clear messaging (and the Prime Minister reinforcing it in Parliament), many parents still view PSLE as an arms race, stacking tuition to outpace the “bell curve.” MOE (or SEAB) will adapt. If tuition masters today's challenges, tomorrow's bar simply rises.

Students and parents should look beyond grades. Give space to grow through portfolio building, hone a clear voice to articulate ideas confidently and nurture genuine interests that stand out. In the race for elite school spots, sustainable excellence stems from depth and not endless drilling. Build skills that endure beyond school, and can propel students to excel in the workforce.
