DSA success 2025

It’s September school holidays now, and for many Primary 6 families, this period brings both relief and anticipation. Early October will see the PSLE written exams: the culmination of six years of primary education and a gateway to secondary school opportunities.

Final DSA-Sec allocation results were announced between late August and early September, marking a key milestone for students on the Direct School Admission route. Our Ryse Education blog has extensively covered portfolio preparation and application pitfalls from the student’s perspective, but little has been written on how schools actually select their candidates. Gaining this perspective helps families make strategic choices for both DSA and regular post-PSLE school selection.

Building a Cohort, Not Just Admitting Top Scorers

Admissions officers aim to assemble a balanced cohort that reflects their school’s mission and values. Rather than just selecting the most decorated applicants, they look for students who demonstrate:

  • Intellectual curiosity and community engagement

  • Alignment with the school’s specific focus for that year

  • Aptitude for applied learning and problem-solving

  • Leadership, character, and service potential

For example, a school may only need new Guzheng players every other year, depending on whether these musicians are graduating. Even the top Guzheng candidate nationally may miss out if there’s no available slot that year, especially if the school is searching for Erhu or Pipa players instead. Similar needs arise in sports. For instance, a soccer program might not require new goalkeepers every intake. Conversely, STEAM talents and future leaders are consistently in demand annually at almost all schools.

How Singapore Schools Select DSA Candidates

Every school sets its own priorities. SST admits all its Secondary 1 students through DSA for STEAM talents, using written tests and hands-on challenges to assess practical problem-solving, though applicants must qualify for the Express track. NUS High School admits all Year 1 students via a two-phase process involving selection tests and camps to ensure candidates’ genuine passion for math and science.

In both cases, academic grades are secondary to demonstrated curiosity, collaboration skills and program fit. Importantly, meeting all criteria does not guarantee admission: shortlisting decisions are driven by both school-specific needs and applicant pool strength.

Note: Students admitted via DSA must commit to their school and cannot participate in the S1 Posting Exercise or transfer after PSLE results are out.

Why Fit Matters More Than Prestige

Often, the best environment for a student isn’t the most prestigious, but the one aligned with their strengths and interests. Consider these scenarios:

  • Space-Tech Enthusiast:

NUS High students built a nanosatellite to be launched by SpaceX. This is an unique, real-world experience unavailable in most schools. (Future Caltech JPL engineer?)

  • Finance Buff:

ACS Independent’s Investment Society offers exposure to trading competitions and finance workshops, ideal for those passionate about financial markets and trading. (Excellent prep for Wharton)

Likewise, a student keen on environmental research should seek schools with strong lab programs, not merely those with elite reputations.

The Holistic Review in Practice

Singapore’s DSA embodies holistic admissions. Schools evaluate portfolios for authentic interests, growth mindset and ability to contribute; not just a list of achievements. Most conduct multi-stage processes (interviews, written tests, auditions or trials) to assess candidates beyond paper credentials.

Expert Guidance Simplifies Complexity

With so much to navigate (selection criteria, school cultures, application timelines) families can easily feel overwhelmed. Educational consultants specializing in Singapore’s landscape provide:

  • Deep knowledge of each school’s values and current needs

  • Customized school-selection and application strategies

  • Coaching for interviews and portfolio presentation

  • Ongoing support throughout the DSA and PSLE journey

At Ryse Education, we turn strategic planning into measurable success by aligning student strengths with each school’s requirements. In a system where fit matters at least as much as achievement, expert guidance is invaluable for finding the right path and optimizing long-term outcomes.
